I posted this model sheet from Dick Lundy's "Playful Pelican" but never the cartoon and since I was just watching it the other day why not repost it with the cartoon.
Beautifully drawn Andy Panda cartoon. It's almost like Walt Disney took over the Lantz studio overnight, with Fred Moore doing some of the animation and all. I still love the cartoons Shamus Culhane directed for Lantz, especially those Swing Symphonies, even though the animation in those wasn't nearly as polished or inked as well as this cartoon (please forgive me for saying that, but I came to that opinion on my own from watching the cartoons for myself instead of blindly believing anyone else. There's still plenty of cool animation in those too that I like, especially coming from Pat Matthews and LaVerne Harding).
I personally think that "Apple Andy," "The Painter and the Pointer," and "Fish Fry" are about the best Andy Panda cartoons I've ever seen. By the way, what happened to the credits for this cartoon? Did you rip this off the first Woody or second Woody DVD collection?
I love Shamus' cartoons, though I will agree that by the time Lundy became the sole director at Lantz that his cartoons were much slicker looking. Though I don't think the studio as a whole would have gotten to that point with Culhane.
I love all the Andy cartoons you mentioned, though the design of Andy in "The Painter and the Pointer" is pretty bad. Thankfully it didn't last. Another of my favorites is Culhane's "Meatless Tuesday". I posted that a long time ago, it should still be up. "Wacky Weed" is another good one.
This was ripped from the first DVD set. It was part of one of the bonus features. The Spookinanny special. I'm not sure what happened with the credits. I assume it was cut for the TV special, the original titles were the last credits for Jack Cosgriff at Lantz.
It's sad to think how stiff and sometimes downright ugly the Lantz stuff became once the studio opened again. Lantz' cartoons were as good-looking as anyone's in the late 40s.
I don't like Andy Panda, but he's well-drawn, stands out from the background and expressive in this cartoon. There's even a running perspective shot. I wish they had been able to keep this style of movement going in the '50s.
Walter Tetley does a nice job here, too. Very natural and his emotional scenes don't sound forced.
I've never liked the lettering on the title cards. A thinner ink line would have been a little classier.

The whole says "Mickey Mouse".
The story, gags and Andy's poses.
Once Fred Moore went over to Lantz, Andy became Mickey in both design and the animation. I'm assuming Moore drew the model sheet.

I actually never saw this cartoon until you posted it. Thanks for the upload. I thought it was worth the watch.
Do you think you could upload Scrappy Birthday or The Painter and the Pointer next?
Actually, since I've been getting Andy Panda stupid lately I am putting Scrappy Birthday up next.
Sweet.
I know how you feel, Kevin. I just got obsessed with Fleshier cartoons lately and I'm thinking of either uploading a Popeye or Betty Boop short next.
Sorry, Fleischer. XD
