Here's a great cartoon directed by George Gordon, Innertube Antics. George Gordon was an animator at MGM and directed six shorts between 1943 and 1945, three of which were Barney Bear cartoons.

Goober Animatic Clips

I haven't really done much posting related to my cartoon lately, I'm just too caught up with studying and watching classics and work and family and the list goes on, so I pieced together a couple of clips from the animatic I made so you can get an idea of what the story's about. It's just two quick scenes and the opening, which I included because the song is great. Anyone recognize it? You might have heard it from a couple of sources. The drawings suck, they're just quick thumbnail sketches. Goober's voice is missing in one clip, the file I used was created before my stepson recorded the dialogue. I provided the rest of the voices, the bee's voice is just sped up using software. I've started animating a little more of it (very little) but I'm really gonna spend more time working on it. Let me know what you think, good or bad.

Tom and Jerry - Million Dollar Cat Layouts

Here's some Tom and Jerry layouts from Million Dollar Cat that I saved that used to be on Cartoon Network's site along with screen shots of the finished backgrounds. Why couldn't Cartoon Network have higher resolution pictures? These are amazing drawings, I would kill to have a book of this stuff. You just don't see backgrounds like these in today's shows that's for sure. Though the backgrounds in the Ren and Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon are really great, the best ones that have been on television in long time.

The finished paintings of these next two shots are beautiful. I would love to see the originals.

A More Expressive Goober

I've been really spending more time trying to draw better so that this Goober cartoon doesn't end up looking like a total piece of crap. I've kept my copy of Preston Blair's Animation under my sleeve and have been practicing. One the pages has examples of different facial expressions and the instructions to pick a character and draw those same expressions. So I figured I try it out with Goober, here's the results with varying degrees of success.

Spike and Tyke

Here's one of only two Spike and Tyke cartoons made by Hanna Barbera at MGM. I think this cartoon is a good example of the direction that Hanna Barbera would take over to television cartoons. The character designs and backgrounds are very similar to what they would later do on Ruff and Reddy and the HuckleBerry Hound Show. The biggest difference is obviously the animation which is far superior here. The pacing is also a lot quicker. The HB television shorts rely on a lot more dialogue and less visual humor which at times can really slow things down.

Betty Boop

I was cleaning up my hard drive and came across these two Betty Boop model sheets so I figured I'd share them. I think I found these originally on the Drawing Board's Model Sheets thread some time ago. Fleischer's Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons are some of the best and most entertaining cartoons ever. If haven't already, check out the link on the sidebar to the Fleischer Popeye Tribute page. It's a great site. I've also uploaded Betty Boop and Grampy in A Song A Day. I love Grampy, he's always up for a song, and finding new ways to play music.

All The Cats Join In

I love cartoons and I love jazz so naturally I get all goofy when their brought together. Here's some screen grabs from All The Cats Join In, which was part of Disney's Make Mine Music. I love every aspect of this cartoon from the dance scenes to the draw as needed backgrounds, the music and of course Fred Moore! I have a very brief dance scene in my own Goober cartoon that I've been working on here and there and I've come to realize how hard animating a character dancing is, at least for me it is. Just look at these drawings from this cartoon, everyone of them is great.
