Zoot Cat

I was going to do a post yesterday about one of my favorite Tom and Jerry cartoons "Zoot Cat" but I was too tired last night to stay up and upload a clip of Irv Spence's dance scene. I went to check out Thad's blog this morning and he beat me to it, even the same model sheet plus some others. This cartoon has some of my favorite animation from Irv Spence. Here's some animation drawings plus a different scene by Irv Spence. Sorry for the copycat post Thad.

No biggie, Kevin. Where are you scanning these animation drawings from? There were a few thick Tom & Jerry books a guy was selling in Aberdeen, but I didn't get them as I didn't have the cash.

These drawings are in "Tom and Jerry:The Definitive Guide to Their Animated Adventures" by Patrick Brion. He's also authored the Tex Avery book "Les Dessins" that's only filled with model sheets and layouts. This one's a thick one. In the back of the book there's a decent amount of animation drawings and a few layouts. The bulk of the book is an overgrown episode guide including the Deitch and Jones cartoons. I saw a used copy on Alibris.com for $22. I love the book, I have to pry it out my stepson's hands. He's even starting to figure out who animated what already at 11 years old, he's a Ray Patterson fan.

I wouldn't recommend "Fifty Years of Cat and Mouse" though. There's some nice pics of various MGM staff in it but almost all of the art is from the horrible TV cartoons. I really overpaid for this one, so unless you see it dirt cheap I'd stay away from it.

"Definitive" was the one at the show I thought about getting then! Thanks, Kevin!

In regards to your stepson, I honestly could tell the animators on Tom & Jerry shorts at an early age, I just had no clue what name to pin a style to.

Fortunately, he has the advantage of your blog. He's always hoping for a Tom and Jerry post.

Irv Spence's animation was always great in the T&J shorts. What is funny how about this scene is Tom making the zoot suit,he makes the suit to win the girl's affection yet he destroys her lampshade and hammock to do it.
