Art Davis - "What Makes Daffy Duck"

More Art Davis for you, this time it's "What Makes Daffy Duck". As usual there's some great backgrounds from Phil DeGuard and excellent animation by Emery Hawkins, Don Williams and company. I'd really like to see some of Don Smith's layouts for Davis's shorts. Anyone happen to see any online anywhere?

Tex Avery - "Of Fox And Hounds"

Here's Tex's first use of the George and Lenny characters from "Of Mice and Men". This is also Willoughby's first appearance and I think Tex was credited with providing his voice. One of the greatest run cycles involving a cartoon dog is in this short so I decided to slow it down so we can check out each of those great drawings.

Barney Bear - "Unwelcome Guest"

Here's another of the six shorts that George Gordon directed for MGM. I may be mistaken but I believe this was the last one he directed. Theres some beautiful backgrounds here and some great animation from Michael Lah, Ed Barge, and Jack Carr. This cartoon also has one of my favorite scores by Scott Bradley. Enjoy.

Fox and Crow - "Punchy De Leon"

This is the very last of the Fox and Crow shorts and the third one by UPA. It's a shame they abandoned the characters as really love the Fox's design. While I think "Robin Hoodlum" and "The Magic Fluke" are better cartoons this is still a really great looking film.

Hell Bent For Election

This earliest of UPA films was was directed by Chuck Jones and made for the United Auto Workers in their support for Franklin Roosevelt's presidential campaign. Most of the artists moonlighted at night to create this short. There some nice designs here courtesy of Jack Schwartz and also some interesting camera angles too.

New Gumby DVD

I don't know if many of the classic cartoon lovers out there love Gumby but I certainly do. I have a bunch of cheap Gumby DVDs, but either they are of terrible quality or the soundtracks have been replaced with horrible synth music. That's just brutal for me, being that I'm a fanatic for those old stock cues. The episodes have been restored and scenes that were deleted on some DVDs have been included. There's a few of the 80s shows on it which are weaker than the original 50s and 60s. I've taken some screen shots from the new DVD and compared it with the same frame from a Cartoon Craze dollar DVD. What a difference. To quote a friend "Wow, the old ones look like they've been soaking in piss." I bring this up because I haven't seen it mentioned that much on any sites.

Donald and Pluto

A whole cartoon built around Pluto's ass. Fantastic. Check out the animator drafts from Hans Perk's collection if you want to know who did what. I had to enable comment moderation because of one man's erotic Woody Woodpecker fetish. Sorry.

Pat Matthews

I've mentioned before how much I enjoy Pat Matthews animation so I decided to string a bunch of clips together. Matthews was great at musical scenes and really wild action, and of course all those women he animated. It's a shame Matthews doesn't seem to get more recognition as he truly deserves it. Shamus Culhane spoke highly, but only briefly of him is his book. Even in Walter Lantz's biography he only gets a passing mention. I found that surprising since Matthews was one of his top animators throughout the 40s. Thankfully Mark Mayerson and Thad Komorowski have given him the spotlight on their blogs with their animator IDs. Matthews went over to UPA after Lantz shutdown the studio in 1948, where he animated on such shorts as "Robin Hoodlum"and "Rooty Toot Toot". Some clips might be jump between Matthews and a different animator but for the most part it's all Matthews. Oh, and they're all clips from Lantz cartoons. At some point I'll try and put one together of his UPA stuff.

An Emery Hawkins Take

There's so many awesome drawings in this take from "Woody Dines Out" that I just had to post them. I don't think many people would argue that Hawkins draws the best looking Woody Woodpecker. Pat Matthews gets my vote for making Woody the most fun to watch but Hawkins' drawings are so perfect and solid.
