UPA - "The Miner's Daughter"

I love the animation in this Bob Canon directed short. I'm still trying to pick out Pat Matthews animation. There's a great run cycle with the miner's daughter that is very similar to one Cannon animated in "Out-Foxed" when he worked under Tex Avery briefly.

  4. I think I'd have to agree with you Mark. The scene in the inflatable house is really great. Any ideas which scenes Matthews animated in this one?

  5. It sounds like the Harvard guy changes from Jim Backus to Frank Graham at the end. It sure isn't Backus doing the last line.

  7. I had seen this cartoon only in the last year, so it was a surprise to see a better copy on your blog. The thing that first struck me was the similarity in design and animation to Cannon's earlier work at Warners and MGM. Specifically, the Harvard grad looks and moves like one of The Dover Boys, while the miner's daughter's animated run is similar to that of the country girl in Avery's Little Rural Riding Hood.

Over all, it is a really nice looking cartoon. I love the shot of the daughter sitting sadly in the water at sunset. Beautiful art direction and use of color throughout. The animation is fun and loose, too.

  11. Quite entertaining. The designs were excellent and quite expressive. Sounds like Thurl Ravenscroft doing the singing bit for Boston Harvard. Thanks for putting this up.
