Droopy
Here's some model sheets of Droopy, oh how I love Droopy cartoons. Not for Droopy but for his adversaries. It's funny to see how well designed he was at first and then to see what has to be one the ugliest damn things I've ever seen. I love the cartoons that Ed Benedict did layouts on but that Droopy design is quite ugly, I'd take the design in the Michael Lah shorts (which isn't too much better) over that any day.

ReplyDeleteEd did the last two model designs in your post. I agree -- nothing matches the early Droopy design from Dumb-Hounded. That fleshy and meaty design really sells the character and makes it funnier that he's able to move around so quickly
ReplyDeleteI like the shorts with Ed's designs, Deputy Droopy is laugh out loud funny but I think Amid hit the nail on the head. The earlier design is just...well, droopy and it definetly makes it funnier when he suddenly springs into action. I think it's those creepy little arms in the later design that I really hate.

Thad - I meant the fact that he shows up beforehand whereever the wolf is. I didn't make that as clear as I should have.
ReplyDeleteAnother great post- model sheets are so fascinating... I reckon it's obvious to you veterns, but it's interesting to me to see stuff like the underlying body under the jail wolf's clothes in the Dumb-Hounded sheet :)
ReplyDeleteI actually haven't seen many Droopy cartoons at all, but Dumb-Hounded was pretty great :) He's got that hilarious slow walk when he first shows up!
I like the two dogs on the left of Droopy on the Deputy Droopy model sheet... the intense look in the shorter one's eyes cracks me up :)
I think I like Senior Droopy the best. Thanks again for posting these. - A happy(?) taxpayer.

ReplyDeleteI can't be the only one with mixed views on Mike Lah's Droopy shorts. They're very funny, but the designs are hideous. Sorry Ed!
Cinemascope did not suit Droopy.

I like the Michael Lah shorts but the designs are bad. Spike looks particularly shitty and the dragon in "One Droopy Knight" looks like some sort of proto-Dino.
ReplyDeleteI think the Ed Benedict designs are hilarious, but they must have been really hard to animate.
ReplyDeleteEd's designs were good for "Deputy Droopy" (though the animators HATED them, Ken Muse in particular), but that was probably more due to Avery's direction. They look like Hell in Lah's shorts.

I like the sherrif's design in "Deputy Droopy" it fits the character and even the small dog is a good design. I'm just not fond of the Droopy design. Though the cartoons are hilarious, I have to agree that they are much funnier than the Tom and Jerry's of the same time.

Droopy's design changed alot over the years, and i think for the better. The early Droopy had a tummy but the more stylized one looked better, for my liking.

In regards to "droopy-ness", I think the latter Droopy still looks sad-sack-like, with the eyes and ears. The old version just looks badly drawn.
