UPA - "Hotsy Footsy"

Here's a good Mr. Magoo short, "Hotsy Footsy" released in October of 1952. There's some great designs and background by Paul Julian. This is the last Magoo short that Pat Matthews animated, or least received screen credit for. I believe he only animated on 3 more cartoons before leaving UPA. I'm not sure what scenes are his though I assume Magoo's little dance in the beginning is probably his animation. Not quite as good as the first half dozen or so Magoo cartoons but I thought it was a pretty funny short.

I've heard about "Hotsy Footsy" before, but I've never seen it before until now. There are so many cool things about this cartoon worth noting, including the really nice Shorty Rogers score (one of my favorite jazz musicians) and the pretty loose, fluid animation. I'm surprised UPA was still doing animation like this even in 1952. Two years later with "When Magoo Flew," the animation got a whole lot less fun and even boring to look at, at least to me.

I had no idea Paul Julian did work at UPA. I always associated him with a lot of Friz Freleng's cartoons. Same thing with Phil Monroe and Chuck Jones.

"Good ol' Magoo!" That one line sums up this short entirely =)

Wow. Such great graphic design and layout. Those backgrounds are incredible. Thanks for reminding me about the genius of Magoo.

I didn't know Julian worked at UPA either - always associated him with WB, with his wonderful airbrush work and lettering.
